As the war went on, this company engaged in its distinctive brand of flag-waving while its operations became increasingly entwined with those of the government. In the 1862 advertisement (incomplete in its scanned version) it was noted that “[t]he ARMY and NAVY SURGEONS have adopted the PALMER LIMBS.” By 1865, discharged soldiers who needed the Palmer Leg, Palmer Arm, or Lincoln Arm were to forward their discharge papers to one of the company’s offices, whereupon they would “be furnished with all necessary to obtain an order for the Limb.” Sailors were to obtain instructions from a naval surgeon. The prices of the limbs were to be “the same as heretofore to officers and civilians.”
